What's Happening in 5A?
*Classes*
*Reading:
(All reading assignments can be
found on PINK paper)
-All of our stories can be found in the
Scott Foresman Reading Street Books. Each week we learn vocabulary for the
story, along with different concepts.
- We
also read three novels throughout the year: "Shiloh", "There's a
Boy in the Girls' Bathroom" and "Charlie and the Chocolate
Factory"
-Book Reports: Each student needs to read an at-level
chapter book and complete a Reading Concepts Report each quarter.
This report counts for 50 points of their reading grade! I do this to
encourage reading, test comprehension and to give students a chance to
read the types of books they most enjoy.
*Spelling: (All spelling assignments can be found on
YELLOW paper)
-Every Friday, students will be sent
home with a list of spelling words for the following week and we
will go over the meanings of each word along with pronunciations. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday each consist of worksheets that
review their ability to accurately spell the word and test their understanding
of the term's definition. Fridays we will do a
review game and then take the test! (All pending that we have a full
week of school)
*Social
Studies: (All Social
Studies assignments can be found on BLUE paper)
-This year is all about "My World" which is the title of our book
published by Pearson. We begin by going over some key terms that
will be used throughout the book so that we can all understand what we are
reading. Then we begin to see how and why people began coming to America
and what life was like for them. We learn about different explorations and
colonies along with discussing the Declaration of Independence, the U.S.
Constitution, and several wars that were fought for
Independence. Note-taking and a knowledge of terms are always essential to
help with comprehension of what we are reading. Projects will be given to
allow students to represent their understanding of the concepts in different
methods.
*Math: (Math assignments will be from their workbook or on GREEN paper)
-This year, students will be given two consumable books that they need to keep throughout the year. One is used as a textbook and one has assignment pages in it. Math is a crucial subject which is why we dedicate one hour each day to the subject.
*Writing:
-This year, writing becomes a very important component as we will take
"Write to Learn" tests throughout the year. These scores are
viewed by the school but are not part of their overall grade. We take a
more in depth approach to writing by working on the whole writing process along
with being able to proof-read other's work as well as our own.
-Parties for No Tardies: Each student that goes a quarter without a single tardy will get to participate in a class party! We really try to encourage students to remember all of their materials when switching classrooms and to remember to bring all of their assignments, completed, with them each day! This is a fun way to reward the students who are always on the ball and come prepared for class!
-Orange Tickets: Whenever a student is seen doing something great, receives a very high score on assignment or test, is being a good role-model/example for their classmates, or does anything which gets them positively recognized, they will receive an orange ticket with a number on it. Every other Friday, I will randomly draw three tickets and the holders of those numbers will receive a prize!
